How long has our center been on campus?

The Women's Resource Center was created in 1999. The position of Coordinator of Sexual Assault Awarness, Outreach, and Education was the result of student demands and was created in 2002. We moved to our current location in the ground floor of Augustine Hall in 2017. We changed our name to the Center for Women and Gender Equity in 2018.

Who does the Center for Women and Gender Equity Serve?

The CWGE serves everyone! We organize large-scale programs addressing the topics of sexual assault, self-empowerment, and dating violence that reach all students all year long. The CWGE does outreach within the residence halls and supports the various groups and clubs on campus. We are home to Coffee, Creativity, and Community sessions, a gathering where students express creativity while building community, held every Wednesday from 7:30-9pm.

Why do we need a Center for Women and Gender Equity?

In the context of a society where women still earn about 80% of what men earn in the workforce, and where women comprise the majority of victims in dating/domestic violence and the majority of victims in sexual assault cases, St. Mary’s College of California is committed to proactively supporting both women and men in addressing these issues.

Why does the Center for Women and Gender Equity serve men as well as women?

The CWGE recognizes that in order to create change and to make the world a more harmonious place for men and women, it is necessary to provide both women and men with a safe place to talk, debrief, learn, and grow as they navigate issues related to relationships, balance, oppression, privilege, and mutual respect.

When is the CWGE open?

The CWGE is open Monday-Friday 9:00am-4:30pm, and often has extended hours for programs and outreach initiatives.
