January 11, 2023

Sharon K. Sobotta, Director of the Center for Women & Gender Equity at Saint Mary's, authored a recent piece for East Bay Express detailing a local filmmaker's effort to shine a light on a little-known part of Bay Area icon Betty Reid Soskin's life story.

Betty Reid Soskin, the nationally renowned park ranger at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond who retired at the age of 100, has also made her mark as a musician, vocalist, and songwriter. Now the documentary "" by Bryan Gibel seeks to highlight that aspect of Betty鈥檚 story.

Having visited Saint Mary's multiple times over the past decade, Betty is also an advocate for honoring intersectional gender and racial identities through her work to create a more just and inclusive world. As Sobotta notes in the story, Betty says, 鈥淚t鈥檚 a both-and world. Your truth may conflict with mine, and still they are both valid.鈥
