At Saint Mary's College, stories of dedication, resilience, and connection abound, but few embody these values as deeply as Marty Kinsey '01, a distinguished alumnus, beloved head coach, and generous donor. Marty's journey from a student-athlete to a leading figure in Saint Mary's athletics is a testament to the transformative power of a Saint Mary’s education and the enduring impact of its unique community.

Marty's connection to Saint Mary's began when he was recruited as a high school student to run for the Saint Mary's cross country team. As he stepped onto the serene Moraga campus, he instantly felt at home. “I fell in love with Saint Mary’s campus, like most people do,” he said. Choosing between Saint Mary's and another university, he was drawn to the close-knit community and the tranquil surroundings.

Marty's college years were marked by both strong connections and a profound loss. During his freshman year, Marty lost his mother unexpectedly. That loss left him bereft and questioning whether he could continue with his studies. “Saint Mary’s wrapped their arms around me and allowed me to be able to continue going to school and practice,” said Marty. “Without that community I would have dropped out and not gone back to college.” With the support of Brother Charles Hilken, FSC, his coaches, and friends, Marty was able to continue his education and athletics commitments. The bonds he formed during those challenging times remain some of his strongest friendships.

After earning a degree in history at Saint Mary's, Marty started his career in business sales management and marketing, and then took a coaching position at Creighton University where his wife Genevieve ‘05 was in medical school. The couple, who both graduated from Saint Mary’s, met after graduation while taking additional classes and their friendship blossomed into a loving partnership. Marty and Genevieve were married in the Saint Mary’s College Chapel, and are parents to a 14-year-old daughter, a 10-year-old daughter, and a 3-year-old son.

The couple's journey took a significant turn when Marty decided to apply for a full-time coaching position at Saint Mary's. Genevieve was able to secure a medical residency position in Oakland, and the couple moved to Moraga. This change allowed Marty to return to his alma mater, where he has made a lasting impact as the head coach of the cross country and track teams. In response to significant growth in the men’s and women’s programs, Marty recently requested to divide the programs and became the head coach for the women’s teams.

He radically changed the culture of the cross country and track teams, he has recruited top-tier athletes and coached them to their highest potential,” said Mike Matoso, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, noting that Marty helped add track as a Division I sport during his tenure at the College. “He and his wife Genevieve are pillars of our Saint Mary’s community.”

Marty Kinsey's coaching philosophy goes beyond athletic achievement. During the pandemic, he and his teams shifted their focus to support athletes as individuals. Recognizing the stress and anxiety many faced, they emphasized open communication to build a supportive community. “This approach has transformed the athletes' experience and brought them closer together,” said Marty.

Marty’s dedication to his student-athletes continues after graduation. He leverages Saint Mary's extensive alumni network to connect students with professionals in various fields, helping them envision their futures beyond graduation. He is committed to ensuring that, by the time his students graduate, they have a clear path forward.

Over the years, he and his wife Genevieve have been generous donors to Saint Mary’s. The couple recently supported the softball stadium renovation, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the campus and its athletic facilities. “As a coach, I travel around the country and see other stadiums,” said Marty. “Genevieve and I agreed that Saint Mary’s needed a better stadium to make it more competitive for recruiting athletes.” The Kinseys also contribute to individual Gael Athletics programs, as well as the Tip-Off Club. “I have a deep respect for our coaches and programs, and can see the impact they have on student-athletes,” said Marty. “I have fond memories of being a student athlete at SMC, and all the support I received.”

Another project the couple proudly funded and constructed was a frisbee golf course on campus. With approval from the facilities department, they purchased all the equipment and Marty built the 9-hole course on campus with help from assistant coach Marc Kaiser. “We poured concrete, put in the tees and baskets. It was a lot of fun to build, and it’s one of my favorite activities,” Marty said. “The course created a new opportunity for students to have fun on campus and we see students playing on it all the time.” 

“The many ways that Marty and Genevieve have enhanced the student experience and changed lives is remarkable,” said Interim President Brother Thomas Jones, FSC. “From Marty’s direct coaching, to their joint support for athletics programs, to providing fun recreational activities – their drive to give back is inspiring.”

For Marty and Genevieve Kinsey, giving to Saint Mary's isn't just about financial support; it's an investment in the future of young adults. Marty’s personal experience with receiving aid during his own time at the college highlights the impact of scholarships and financial assistance. “After my mom died our family’s financial situation changed significantly, and the financial support I was receiving became critical,” he said. “I wouldn’t have been able to continue attending Saint Mary’s without that support.” He also points to Saint Mary’s commitment to providing opportunities for first-generation and low-income students. “Saint Mary’s is known for helping students who are first in their family to go to college, or who are struggling financially,” he said. The Kinseys hope their generosity will inspire others to see their gifts as investments in the education and success of deserving students who may not otherwise have opportunities.

Marty Kinsey's journey from a student-athlete to a dedicated coach and donor illustrates the enduring connection between Saint Mary's College and its alumni. “We love supporting the Gaels,” said Marty. “It’s part of our life, it's just who we are. When I go to work, it’s not like clocking into work, it’s part of our DNA.” His unwavering commitment to his alma mater and its Lasallian values is an inspiration to all Gaels.
