Announcing the College’s Strategic Plan

Transformation 2028: Our Centennial Year in Moraga

by Richard Plumb, PhD, President | February 7, 2023

At our recent meeting, members of our Board of Trustees approved our Transformation 2028: Our Centennial Year in Moraga strategic plan. I’m pleased today to share the five-year plan with you, and I look forward to sharing the key themes and strategic priorities at my State of the College Address on February 22.

Our vision is to “become a leading innovative, national Catholic University that inspires minds, touches hearts, and transforms lives.” Transformation 2028 is the roadmap to realizing that vision. It’s a course that holds true to our mission as we pursue knowledge, ensure access to education, and empower students to make a lasting change in this world. And building on what has come before, it’s an opportunity for us to meet the changing needs of students, our region, and the world around us.

We’ve laid out eleven strategic priorities in Transformation 2028, each of which is mapped to foundations and opportunities outlined in the plan. Our intent is to make this strategic plan achievable and realistic, while at the same time inspirational and aspirational.

I am deeply appreciative toward all of those at Saint Mary’s who participated in the strategic planning process. Without them, we could not have arrived at such a forward-looking plan. A special thank you goes to past and current members of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee:

  • Margaret Kasimatis, Former Provost, co-chair
  • Dana Lawton, Faculty (School of Liberal Arts), co-chair
  • Jennifer Pigza, Director, Catholic Institute for Lasallian Social Action, co-chair
  • Swetta Abeyta, Librarian
  • James Berleman, Faculty (School of Science)
  • Brother Chris Brady, FSC, BA ’75, Former Chaplain for Athletics (Mission and Ministry) and Auxiliary Visitor/Director of ǿմý Brothers Community
  • Vidya Chandrasekaran, Faculty (School of Science)
  • Noha Elfiky, Faculty (School of Economics and Business Administration)
  • Legacy Lee, Director, Intercultural Center
  • Dennis Meiss ’69, Trustee
  • Kari Montero, Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Support
  • Natasha Munshi, Faculty and Interim Dean (School of Economics and Business Administration)
  • Laurie Panian, Former Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
  • Tracy Pascua Dea, Former Assistant Vice Provost for Student Success
  • Mary Raygoza, Faculty (Kalmanovitz School of Education)

Transformation 2028 aligns closely with Saint Mary’s values and tradition. It will help us answer important questions: How is the College contributing to solving the world’s challenges? Are we reinventing ourselves when necessary, adding or modifying programs that are relevant to the changing and emerging region, state, and world around us? Are we addressing these essential questions with solutions that reflect our core values?

Saint Mary’s College must be transformational for our students and our community. The name of the strategic plan speaks to that need and opportunity.

I invite all of you to

Sincerely,

Richard Plumb, PhD
President
